Marrow Pangs
I taught him how to skip bones on acid lakes...
I taught him how to skip bones on acid lakes, how to get three jumps in before the marrow dissolves. Maybe he’d teach me how to kiss in return. But our next deployment came, and I never asked him to. Time dissolved into mud and ivory. All that mattered was the enemy’s skeleton army. All that was allowed to matter. His gas mask hid his freckles. It should have kept him safe.
They buried him yesterday, and I never learned shit. We made sure the soil in his grave was nice and firm. No wandering out.
There’s not much flesh left to me as I wander the camp. Maybe they should heap soil on me too. Not much would be lost, just someone who waits too long.
“Hey,” his cousin interrupts. He downs a glass of liquid courage, then smiles like he could show me things. “Wanna teach me how to skip bones sometime?”
